🌿 Wax, Rain, and Road Dust: A Weekend of SCA Firsts

This past weekend, I had the joy of attending an SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) event in Apex, North Carolina—and it was one for the books. I brought my RV and settled in from Friday through Sunday, embracing the full experience as a first-time deputy autocrat.

It was also my first real boondocking adventure. The site was a wide-open field surrounded by trees, with no hookups in sight. I came prepared: water tank filled, supplies packed, ready to rough it in style.

Saturday was the heart of the weekend. Lorelei and I formalized our Peer/protege relationship as I became protege in a quiet, meaningful ceremony. In the SCA, a Peer/protege relationship is a mentorship between a member of a Peerage Order—like the Pelican, Laurel, or Chivalry—and someone they’re guiding and supporting in their journey. It’s built on mutual respect, shared goals, and a commitment to growth within the community. For me, it’s about recognizing someone’s potential and walking beside them as they explore their path.

We signed a contract, sealed it with wax, and cut it in half to exchange—a gesture that felt both ancient and deeply personal. My friend John also became an apprentice, and Lorelei was inducted into the Order of the Mark. Another dear friend joined the Order of the Pearl for their contributions to the arts and sciences. These moments made the event unforgettable.

Behind the scenes, I’ve spent years building websites, helping with check-in, and doing the quiet work that keeps things running. Lorelei and I share passions for beekeeping, archery, and lately, orchids. Our ceremony had about ten attendees, and it felt just right.

The day was hot—brutally so. I ducked into the RV for cold showers and hydration more than once. Evening brought a soft rain and a Persian-inspired feast with multiple removes. The food was incredible, even if the heat had sapped my appetite.

Sunday was all about cleanup and pack-out. I hit the road by noon, grateful and content. I’ll still keep my tent and gear, but RVing has officially won me over for future SCA adventures.
